Lasting Inspiration

I’m thirteen in this memory. On weekend mornings, I eat my breakfast watching a TV. After a few news programs, documentary programs come on, and I continue watching for some time even after I finish eating my meal.

One day, a documentary program takes me to an old lady living in a beautiful house in a forest in New England. She maintains a vast garden outside her cozy old-fashioned home and spends a long time of her day looking after it.

This woman says there is no need to plan her day in the garden because the garden will gently nudge her to what needs special attention that day. Something about this comment feels deep. I carefully tuck it away in my memory so that I can always remember it.

Her life is very slow and intentional, making such a big contrast to the kind of life I’m having. Suddenly, I’m inspired to be like her. To live a life where I don’t exactly make a plan for the day but my home and garden tell me what needs to be done.
